Description
- RHS Wisley is a botanical garden managed by the Royal Horticultural Society. The primary focus is the plants but it also makes a good short walk with considerable interest throughout. Children love the water lily pond with its carp and in the summer dragonflies and damselflies, as well as the glasshouse, and there are always interesting plants and flowers to explore. We fondly remember apple and apple juice tasting at the "Taste of Autumn" harvest festival although in recent years the events have become become more commercial, presumably to help fund improvements such as the Hilltop centre and the new entrance that reveals the original house. Nick remembers the RHS selling its apples with exotic names such as "winter banana", back when he was small.
Info
Nick, Katy, Eve and Chris once saw a little owl sitting on a post overlooking the children's play area near the glasshouse.
Wet weather
- Some of the paths are gravel and in other areas you can wander around rather than sticking to paths as would be expected in most managed outdoor space, so often the garden is surprisingly decent unless wet weather has been particularly prolonged. In cold weather the garden is a lot less popular and it can be a nice change to walk around the pinetum with very few other visitors.
