Walks
- There are some waymarked walks available.
- However we will normally start the walk from Forge Common to near Heather Farm cafe, then take a path around the northern side of the common, circling back southwards to the sandpit, and returning via one of the more southern paths nearer Shores Road.
Description
- Horsell Common and its sandpit were made famous as the location of the martians' landing in HG Wells' War of the Worlds. Much of the common is wooded but with some more open areas, giving a mix of habitats, and part of it is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is possible to spend hours on the various sections of the common never walking along a road (although crossing a few). Elsewhere on the common there are some bronze age barrows of national importance and the Peace Garden. Heather Farm cafe has facilities including a dog wash. This is our favourite heath in Surrey.
Wet weather
- Lower areas get very muddy in the winter.
