Parking
What is the parking like?
- Usually ok in the car park at the point that the Portsmouth Road goes over the A3, often busy in the other car parks closer to Esher and at Oxshott Heath.
What are the parking charges like?
- Free
Walks
- Our favourite walk is a circular walk of Oxshott Heath, walkable from the Crown Estate where Nick and Gemma grew up. The area is not that large so start at either car park and use paths roughly going circular around the whole of Oxshott Heath, being sure to take in the hilly area at the war memorial and its viewpoint.
- Alternatively for Esher Common, from the less used car park on the Portsmouth Road, we would walk into the common and then roughly to the right, coming out to Sandy Lane, and then circling left and around that area.
- Longer walks are available walking in a circular direction from the busier car parks closer to Esher or a much larger walk taking in all the Commons (including Fairmile Common, West End Common and Arbrook Common) using the Exploring the Esher Commons map.
Description
- Much of the main areas of Oxshott Heath and Esher Common are coniferous woodland, with adjacent commons being mostly deciduous. All the commons have various open heathland areas, with overall a wide range of habitats that supports its status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Wet weather
- Despite the dirt paths, Oxshott Heath in particular is usually not bad except in very prolonged wet weather, as there are plenty of pine needles that add body to the mud and it tends to be higher than surrounding areas.
