Welcome to the place for the Shearman family to retain and share information about anything, inspired by a request to share our family recipes for kids and adults.

This site is presented as a "digital garden". A digital garden is like a blog but less linear, instead ideas and connections are made in a more organic way, without the need for articles to be full formed or tied to a timeline. For some background on this concept, see A brief history & ethos of the digital garden.

In practice what this means is that much of the information shared may be a work in progress, incomplete or otherwise unfinished, but should present a more consistent whole, much better linked together and freed from the conventions of timestamped articles common in blogs.

Comments

Comments are enabled on every page other than this home page. This functionality requires a Github account to leave feedback but this at least avoids the adverts and data sharing necessary for other free options.

Credits

For those interested in the technical details, this site was made using some very simple Markdown in Obsidian, with its Digital garden plugin and some styling and component customisation. The whole project took mere hours to set up and deploy to a custom domain with automated Let's encrypt security certificates through Netlify, with version control and comments through Github. This or similar solutions are recommended to anyone looking to publish similar content.

Dogs logo

Nana Veronica loved her pedigree West Highland White Terrier Ellie. Nana Susan and grandad Eric loved their pedigree English Setters, including a few from the famous Suntop kennels. The logo simply brings these together.
